Take the family on a scenic drive no one will forget before school goes back in session. Michigan is a beautiful state, and if you’re lucky enough to live in Livonia where Kirk’s Auto Care is located, you’ve got access to many stunning routes that will take everyone’s breath away. Here are five of the best Michigan summer drives the state has to offer, so get your cameras ready. Well, not you if you’re driving.
Red Arrow Highway
Red Arrow Highway is a Michiganite favorite because it drives along Lake Michigan. If you start in New Buffalo, MI, and head north toward St. Joseph, MI, you’ll see plenty of the lake as well as coastal villages where you can stop and grab a bite to eat. There are vineyards along the way for mom and dad and you can hang out at Weko Beach until the sun sets, which is stunning in and of itself.
M-22 offers drivers and riders access to Sleeping Bear Dunes National Lakeshore among other amazing stops. Start in Arcadia, MI. Arcadia is a beach-side town where you can take a refreshing dip before you move on toward Frankfort, MI, the end of your drive. Craft beer awaits mom and dad along the way and nothing beats the view along Inspiration Point Climb. Maybe you should leave the kids at home!
You can catch US-23 from M-55 in Tawas City, MI. If you stay on US-23 all the way to Alpena, MI, you’ll be driving along Lake Huron. This is what makes Michigan so cool, we have access to three Great Lakes! Aside from Lake Huron’s beauty along the way, you can also stop and see the Sturgeon Point Lighthouse and camp overnight at Harrisville State Park. You’ll be right on the lake and you can’t beat that.
River Road Scenic Byway
Begin in Oscoda, MI, and take the River Road Scenic Byway west until it ends. This Michigan summer drive takes you along the AuSable River and all it has to offer. Michigan has a storied history of lumbermen and the Lumberman’s Monument is an apt tribute to them. You can also stop and go hiking along the river for some fun family activity. The scenic byway also gives you a stunning view of AuSable Valley.
US-2 also takes you along the shore of Lake Michigan, as well as intrigues you with the “Mystery Spot” and Mackinac Bridge. If you take US-2 west all the way to Manistique, MI, you’ll have plenty of family fun. There are places for shoreline picnics and you can take a dip in Lake Michigan afterward. Wait 30 minutes! Make sure to traverse the Cut River Bridge Overlook, a combo of trails and a staircase.
