5 questions you should ask every shop

Kirk Richardson discusses 5 important questions you should ask when you are considering a new auto repair shop.

1. How long has the shop been in business?


Shops come and go so fast in this industry. Make sure the shop you are considering has a proven track record in their community. 10 years is always a good sign. We have been Richardson family owned and operated for 20+ years at the same location.

2. Tell me about your technicians….


The words you want to hear are ASE Certified Technicians. All mechanics have to be state certified – this is a law in Michigan, so what you really want is ASE Certified Technicians working on your car. ASE certification is a much higher level of knowledge and professionalism when compared to basic state certifications. We currently staff 2 ASE Certified mechanics.

3. Do they have a third party source for Customer Satisfaction Scores?


Many shops hire outside independent companies to survey their customers. You should only consider shops with a 95% or better customer satisfaction score. Our current score is 98.2%.

4. What kind of warranty do you have?


Any respectable shop is going to offer at least 12 month/12,000 miles. Some shops now offer 36 month/36,000 mile warranties or greater. A little word of warning, beware of the “Lifetime Warranty”. ”Lifetime Warranty” can be a breeding ground for unethical behavior if not controlled properly by the shop management. We currently offer a 18 month/18,000 mile warranty.

5. What kinds of extra convenient services do you offer?


Many shops at this point offer convenience services such as loaner cars, shuttle service, online payment and same day service. Ask the shop what they can do for you.
